Reading Goals Sept 25-29

This will be a short week, but with a lot of learning!!!  This week we will:

Reading: Continue in the fiction genre with the read aloud, “Thundercake” by Patricia Palocca.  The kids are really enjoying learning about her writing/illustrating style.  Some of the story vocabulary we will focus on will be:stammered, surveryed, crowed, penned, luscious, treller, and samovar. (Reading Skills:3.7F respond using newly acquired vocabulary appropriately). We will also learn more about characterization in this genre and how character traits can change throughout that story. (3.8B explain the relationships among the major and minor characters).  We will continue discussing story elements( 3.8C analyze plot elements, including the sequence of events, the conflicts and resolution) work on using the 6 syllable types in helping us with our reading of words.( 3.2Aiv decoding words using syllable division patterns such as VCCV, VCV and VCCCV).  We will introduce the meaning of prefixes to help us with the understanding of the words we are reading (3.2Av decoding words with knowledge of prefixes).

We will coninue working on poetry skills with reading “The Wind”.  We will test these skills this week of rhyme scheme, rhyming words, stanzas, poetry, lines, and basic comprehension of poems. ( 3.9B rhyme scheme, sound devices, and structural elements such as stanzas.)

Language Arts:We will introduce prefixes and their meanings in our writing and to spell. (3.2Bvi spelling words using knowledge of prefixes).  We will also respond to our reading of Thundercake to work on drafting in the writing process.(3.12A compose literary text, including personal narratives and poetry)

Social Studies:  We will be looking at   local celebrations in the our  community with other communities  using graphic organizers such as a venn diagrams.(3.13.B compare ethnic and/or cultural celebrations in the local community with other communities*)

TUESDAY IS OUR LIBRARY DAY-STUDENTS WILL NEED THEIR BOOKS THAT DAY!

IMPORTANT:  NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY!  WE WILL BE STARTING OUR BIG KAHUNA FUNDRAISER THIS WEEK.  BE WATCHING FOR THAT INFORMATION TO COME HOME.

HOMEWORK IS DUE ON THURSDAY AS USUAL.

 

Learning Goals for Sept. 4-Sept. 8

It’s been another great week!  I am enjoying my students so much.  I hope they are enjoying my classes as well.  This past week We sorted nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives. ( 3.2Bi, 3.2Biv, 3.11A, 3.11Div) and located them in  our sentences.  We read stories and discussed their genres , their vocabulary, and their meanings   We learned MORE about our community around us.  Next week ,we will be learning the following skills:

Reading:  We will read  “Saturdays and Teacakes” by Lester Laminack as our interactive read aloud.  As we read, we will review practice these skills:3.8A infer the theme of a work, distingusihing these from topic, 3.8D explain the influence of the setting on the plot, 3.2Aii decoding multisyllabic words w/ closed, open, VCe syllables, vowel teams, diagraphs/dipthongs,r-controlled, final stable (le),3.7C use text evidence to support an appropriate response,3.7G discuss specific ideas in the text that are important to the meaning. We will practice ABC order and will even take a grade at the end of the week. 3.2C alphbetize a series of words to the third letter.)

Writing: We will respond  to the text we read.  We will review  to identification of  adverbs, adjectives, nouns, and verbs (3.11v) and how they are used in your writing.  Students will practice brainstorming their ideas.(3.11A)plan first draft by selecting a genre for topic, purpose, and audience).  We will have another grammer quiz at the end of the week.  (We noticed after last week’s quiz that we needed to do some extra reteaching with these parts of speech!)  

Spelling: We will continue learning how to spell our 10 high frequency words from last week: about, bring, even, has, live, only, say, there, wash, after. (3.11D.xi correct spelling of words with grade appropriate orthographic patterns and rules and HFW).  We will introduce and work with contractions and compound words 3.2Aiii decoding compound words, contractions and abbreveations).

Social Studies: Students will be begin learning about our local and state governments. (3.2A, 3.14B,3.14C,3.15A,3.15D,3.15E)

Students will have book bags coming home this tomorrow (9/5)!  Please read with your child every night!  Homework will also come home on Friday (9/8). It will be due next Thursday (9/14)/.
